The client said he liked my voice. He gave me a manuscript and the only direction he gave me was, "Just be yourself." I thought, "Yeah, right!" Surely, I thought, the client would want me to add some pizzazz. I didn't think my voice was good enough to be heard "as is." But, the client was adamant. So, I read the manuscript in a casual manner, much the way I would read it if I was reading something out loud to myself.
To my surprise, the client was thrilled with the result and I have been hired for multiple projects ever since. Now, when I read a script, I just sit down in front of the microphone and read. That's my job... to read out loud. I enjoy reading, so I enjoy my job a lot.
Bill DeWees is a well-known voiceover professional. His advice through personal coaching, videos, and books are valuable to no end. In today's video, Mr. DeWees talks about how a good voice over is like an electric toothbrush. The message is that voiceover professionals do not need to work so hard. We should approach the assignment from a more natural tone. I think this is excellent advice.
